The Present Something Elsewhere Becomes
Waves Become Feathers (2017) · Digital photograph
These photographs gather encounters with the natural world: mountains half hidden by cloud, birds caught in flight, woodland, animal remains, and the changing surfaces of water.
Photography is a practice of attention—a way of slowing down, staying with something, and looking more deeply. The camera holds fleeting gestures and draws me into details I might otherwise pass by. Moments of stillness sit alongside sudden movement; sharp observation gives way to blur and abstraction.
Through sustained looking, one thing begins to become another. Waves become feathers, trees become faces, and the surface of water becomes a painting. A shift in light, focus or movement makes it possible to see something that the unaided eye couldn’t quite hold.
The collection grows out of becoming enchanted with detail: following a shape, a reflection or a rhythm until the familiar opens into something unexpected. And allowing for surprise.
